Exercise Myths

Experts claim that there are many myths and half-truths in the fitness world. Everyone is looking to maximize results, but our bodies react differently to exercise. What works in a certain way for one person might not work the same way for another. Though some myths are harmless, others may be hindering you from fully achieving your fitness goal.
To help you get fit, we consulted professional fitness trainers and compiled a list of the most common exercise myths.

No pain, no gain
There is a widespread misconception that one must feel pain in order to get the benefits of working out. Though the gains increase with intensity, you don’t have to overdo it. Professional fitness instructors recommend doing frequent moderate intensity exercises over occasional vigorous-intensity exercises. You need to exercise smart not hard.

You should stretch before workouts to prevent injuries
It is important to do some dynamic warm-ups before a workout, but you don’t have to stretch. In fact, it’s actually better to stretch after the workout when your muscles are warm. Studies show that stretching before an exercise neither prevents nor causes injury.

You can “spot-train”
The most common is spot-reducing for tight abs and toned arms. The truth is, if you want to lose fat from a particular spot, you have to lose overall body fat as fat cells are distributed across the whole body.

Cardio machines can count the calories you burn
The number of calories you burn depends on your age, sex, BMI, and fitness level. Each manufacturer uses a different algorithm to calculate calorie expenditure hence the numbers given are likely not accurate.

Lifting weights lead to bulky muscles
Women don’t have the specific genes or hormones to add muscle bulk hence it’s very difficult for them to make their muscles big and bulky. Their testosterone levels are way less than in men. Moreover, lifting lighter weights will actually help you get a leaner body.

Exercise turns fat into muscle
This is completely false as one type of cell cannot be turned into another. Exercise helps you to lose fat by burning calories and build muscle through strength training.

10 Mistakes You’re Probably Making That Make it Harder to Lose Weight

Looking to lose weight? There are some common mistakes which are made by people looking to shed the pounds which can be easily avoided to maximize your chance of your weight loss.

Tip: Another way to boost weight loss is to make sure you get enough sleep every night. Being short on sleep is correlated with weight gain. A full night’s sleep boosts metabolism and keeps you burning fat throughout the day instead of metabolism becoming sluggish from sleepiness.

So, in a nutshell, setting unrealistic and going to extremes in dieting can end up having the opposite effect on weight loss. When you skip meals and diet at a level that is too difficult to maintain over time, it can have the opposite effect and cause a rebound and weight gain.

Signs You Might Have Asthma

Asthma is caused by an allergic reaction with allergens in the air. This means that breathing as normal can trigger the reaction and cause you to become wheezy or short of breath quickly.

Shortness of Breath
The most well known symptom of asthma is a sudden shortness of breath. This can be triggered by gentle exercise or just on a day to day basis that you begin to feel short of breath often. Whilst initially this might feel like you’re simply unfit, it actually is a signal that you may be living with asthma. It’s important to treat this symptom seriously as it can be the start of a asthma attack, which may be life threatening.

Chest Tightness
The other commonly recognised sign of asthma is the feeling of tightness in the chest. The feeling is frequently described as feeling as though there’s a restriction on your chest which means you feel like you can breathe air in and out. In turn this may trigger anxiety that you cannot breathe and therefore cause the symptoms to worsen. It’s important to monitor how frequently this chest tightness occurs and to contact a doctor if you are concerned about the symptoms.

Daily Triggers
When you’re suffering from asthma, a lot of the day to day things we take for granted can be a significant trigger to an asthma attack. For example, smoking, exercise or cold air can cause asthma to impact your daily life. It’s important to take precautions if you think you have asthma to avoid these situations which can worsen your symptoms. You can also try to alleviate them yourself by being cautious of the time you spend around smokers, warming up slowly into exercise and staying warm when going into cold weather.  If you do get diagnosed with asthma, an inhaler can help you manage these day to day symptoms efficiently.

Trouble Sleeping
Typically the symptoms of asthma worsen at night which can lead to significant trouble sleeping. It’s likely that you have asthma if you find that the above symptoms become more severe at night or when you’re lying down. This feeling of a tight chest or shortness of breath can create serious issues sleeping as there’s a panic that you will stop breathing, hence it’s important to gain the appropriate treatment to manage your symptoms at home.

A full diagnosis will require a medical exam and consultation with a specialist so if you believe you may be suffering from asthma, it’s important to contact a medical professional.

Do you feel like you’re tired all the time? Like no matter how much you sleep you’re always dragging? Do your friends complain that you’re always too tired to do something fun? 1 in 5 people feels unusually tired all the time.

Blood tests would need to be done by a doctor to determine if there is a medical condition that could be causing constant fatigue. Physical conditions like diabetes, sleep apnea and food intolerance can cause this. But, if a medical condition has been ruled out, there are other reasons for feeling worn out.

Here are some other things that could be making you feel tired:

1. A Life Change – A recent life change like a move, a broken or ended relationship, loss of a loved one or any other major life like a marriage can be emotionally exhausting, even if it’s a good thing. Sometimes we don’t even realize how much emotional energy is needed to process a major life change. It’s important to give ourselves a break, maybe do something fun or distracting or try to reduce some responsibilities in order to cope with the major change.

2. Short on Sleep – If you find yourself waking up during the middle of the night, distracted or thinking about life and unable to quickly get back to sleep, you may be suffering from a sleep shortage throughout the day. Sporadic sleep patterns can cause tiredness during the day.

3. Anxiety & Depression – If you are constantly worried about things happening in your life or have anxiety or depression pulling on you throughout the day, this can be a major energy-sucker. You may not realize it but anxiety and depression eats away at the energy you have throughout the day and makes it harder to get things done.

5. Poor Eating Habits – A diet that consists of junk food & lots of sugar will make you feel foggy headed and a little tired throughout the day. Instead of feeling that natural ‘high’ that comes from a good diet, your body will be a little groggy and sluggish. Try juicing to fast track your body to a healthier, clearer state. Juicing is a great way to get those nutrients into your body quick!

Weird Facts about Acne

There are six different types of acne, and some are tougher to treat than others. Common whiteheads and blackheads, caused by blocked pores, generally go away with over-the-counter products. More difficult to treat: papules (raised, solid bumps) and pustules (papules with pus in them). Worse still are nodules and cysts, which form deep in the skin and can really hurt. Visit a dermatologist near you for treatment advice.

Does your back or body ever breakout after exercising? The sweat rubbing and building up against your skin is likely to blame. Amy Kim, MD, a dermatologist affiliated with Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, offers a simple solution: “I tell my patients to buy over-the-counter anti-bacterial soap and keep it in the shower. When you see a breakout coming, just lather some on. It usually helps settle the skin down.”

Do you scrub your skin to get rid of acne? Turns out, zits may not respond well to that. In fact, excessive cleaning can aggravate skin, which can cause even more pimples.

Contrary to popular belief, acne isn’t usually caused by a dirty face. All the biological activity that leads to acne actually begins beneath the skin, so over-scrubbing does nothing but make it worse. Gently wash your skin no more than twice a day with warm water and a mild cleanser.

If you’re bummed out that acne treatment results aren’t great after a couple weeks, here’s the hard truth: Breakouts take an average of six to eight weeks to disappear. Be patient with your acne treatment, and if at 10 weeks you don’t see any changes, reach out to your dermatologist to discuss an alternate treatment plan. However, if you have cystic or nodular acne, reach out to your doctor sooner to get help and prevent scarring, since over-the-counter remedies won’t help these types of acne.

Stop Breaking Out

Here are the 5 things that you’re probably doing that are causing your face to breakout or worsen your existing acne.

Another great way to fix breakouts is to do chemical or acid peels like AHA, Glycolic, Lactic, Mandelic Acid, TCA or Jessner Peels. Those can get rid of acne & breakouts practically overnight. Also make sure to cut back on sugar as sugar can contribute to breakouts and acne.
